Up for sale, a 1989 Fender Stratocaster ‘72 vintage reissue model ST72-55 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with an SKB molded hardshell case. Produced during the golden age of “Made in Japan” production at the venerable Fujigen factory, this Strat was marketed exclusively to the Japanese domestic market and is uncommon outside of its country of origin.Tonewoods include a sen ash body and a one-piece maple neck, delivering an authoritative natural acoustic profile with midrange push and treble cut. The trio of alnico magnet single coil pickups offer a range of traditional Strat tonalities: the bridge has ample spank and sparkle, the neck has throaty, full-sounding warmth, and the in-between positions on the five-way pickup selector switch have quintessential hollow Strat quack. This guitar weighs 8lbs 1oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation. The one-piece maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .815” deep at the 1st fret and .895” at the 12th. The maple fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius and retains the stock slender frets which are in great shape, showing just a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-2 and a few areas of light finger wear through the fretboard gloss on the maple board as well. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock bone nut measures 1.650” (42mm) in width, and the headstock sports an era-accurate block logo, bullet truss rod, and Gotoh tuners which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The “Made in Japan” text and G-prefix serial are present above the three-bolt F-embossed neck plate. All of the electronics function as intended, with the pickups wired to the original harness with full-size pots that date to October, 1989. Hardware includes the vibrato which has a full-size block, actuating smoothly and complete with '70s-spec block saddles. Plastics include the three-ply white pickguard and uniformly-aged original knobs and pickup covers. The gloss Natural finish highlights the dynamic grain in the ash, and cosmetic wear includes a number of small dings on the body, largely relegated to the lower bout edge. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with a few shallow marks along the profile length and light palm wear on the bass-side shoulder. An SKB molded hardshell case is included.
