Up for sale, a 1989 Fender Telecaster Custom ‘62 vintage reissue in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, upgraded with a set of Fender USA Custom Shop Texas Special pickups and complete with a vintage Fender hardshell case. Officially model TL62B-70, this "Made in Japan" Telecaster is an early example produced at the Fujigen factory and meant only for the Japanese domestic market, rarely seen outside its country of origin.Tonewoods include a basswood body, maple neck and thick slab rosewood fretboard, ensuring a balanced, clear acoustic profile that provides an excellent platform for the Texas Special pickups. These single coils have plenty of chewy Tele twang; with a slightly hotter, overwound sound that provides a subtle bump in the midrange frequencies. The neck pickup is rounder and fuller, with a more aggressive, distinctive bite at the bridge. Mirroring vintage Tele specifications, the Texas Specials have black bobbins, cloth-covered leads, and a brass baseplate on the bridge. Weighing 7lbs 10oz, this Tele has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation. The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .815” deep at the 1st fret and .915” at the 12th. The rosewood slab fretboard is an extremely dark, tight-grained cut of this particular tonewood, with a traditional 7 1/4” radius and stock slender fretwire. The frets have their full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-6. This Tele plays cleanly in all registers with a straight neck and responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The scale length is 25 1/2”, and the bone nut measures 42mm (1.650”) in width. On the headstock, the Kluson-style tuners turn smoothly and hold stable pitch. The “Made in Japan” text is present above the “Fender”-embossed four-bolt neck plate. The neck heel and pocket retain their factory stamps, and the heel's pencil date reads September 1st, 1989.All of the electronics work as intended, with the aftermarket upgraded Fender Custom Shop Texas Special pups governed by a three-way pickup selector and Master Volume and Tone controls. The harness is original, with full-size pots that date to late '88. Hardware includes the “Pat. Pending” bridge plate with vintage-style spiral saddles and A-prefix serial number. The original pair of flat-top knurled knobs round out the hardware and have clean chrome plating. Plastics include the three-ply parchment pickguard which shows some requisite scuffing across the pick path. The three-tone gloss Sunburst finish is remarkably well-kept, with cosmetic wear limited to a handful of very faint finish scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole, and some minor marks just forward of the string ferrules, shy of “buckle rash.” The smooth gloss finish on the neck profile is immaculate.A vintage (era correct Fender USA molded hardshell case is included. The lock on the middle latch is not functional, but the case is entirely secure.
