1989 BC Rich Mockingbird NJ Series MG-801 Vintage Electric Guitar Black, Japan

Up for sale, a 1989 B.C. Rich Mockingbird MG-801 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag. Part of the NJ (Nagoya, Japan) series, this bolt-on iteration of the Mockingbird platform was produced for the Japanese domestic market. Features include streamlined controls, a traditional 3x3 headstock, a Floyd Rose-licensed vibrato tailpiece, and a pair of humbuckers engineered for high gain.

The pickups are modeled after the DiMarzio Super Distortion with a high output ceramic magnet design, providing a range of roaring tonalities with power, richness and midrange push, metering at 11k ohms. The bridge is snarling and aggressive, and the neck has ample girth and fullness. This Mockingbird weighs 8lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with well-rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .790” deep at the 1st fret and .930” at the 12th. On the slab 24-fret rosewood fretboard, the medium jumbo fretwire only shows very light wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-8. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the locking nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock sports a rosewood veneer with “R” inlay, and the tuning machines function reliably.

The pickup pair is governed by a three-way selector switch, Master Volume, and independent Tone knobs, and the wiring harness has full-size Japanese pots that date to ‘89. The hardware is all quite clean, including the black dome-topped knurled knobs and the Floyd Rose-licensed B.C. Custom tremolo, complete with the original arm.

Cosmetic wear on the gloss Black finish includes a number of minor dings on the body as a whole, largely along the lower bout perimeter, with some light finish touch-up at the bass-side corner of the lower bout. The neck profile retains its smooth satin finish.

The original B.C. Rich-branded faux leather padded gigbag is included.
