Up for sale, a 1988 Rickenbacker 4003S in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A one-owner instrument with a rare feature set, this bass is an early example with many McCartney-esque hallmarks including an unbound, contoured body, dot inlay on the padauk fingerboard, and neck position Toaster Top pickup.

With neck through body construction, this Rickenbacker is extremely resonant and powerful-sounding, thumping and growling in equal measure and offering exquisite sustain. Strung with fresh 45-105 roundwound strings, the bass delivers plenty of midrange power and fundamental warmth via the neck position Toaster and Hi-Gain bridge pickup. The bass is quite lightweight for a Ric at 9lbs, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with easy-playing action and accurate intonation.

The neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with round shoulders, measuring .860” at the 1st fret and .925” at the 12th. The 33 1/4" scale is Rickenbacker's traditional long scale, and the gloss-finished unbound slab padauk fretboard features dot inlay and original medium jumbo fretwire that shows virtually no wear. The neck is straight with responsive, optimally adjusted truss rods, and the nut measures 1.650" in width. The Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover is present, and the clover button tuners turn smoothly.

All of the electronics work as they should, the solder joints are untouched, and the CTS pots date to late '87. The mono jack plate has a cleanly stamped serial number with an "F1" prefix that dates to June of 1988. All of the original chrome-plated hardware is intact and extremely clean, including the bridge with five anchor screws and the original adjustable mute. Plastics include the one-ply white pickguard and original complement of knobs.

The Fireglo gloss finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, with cosmetic wear limited to a few small finish chips, localized buckle wear on the bass-side upper bout, and just a few additional small dings and scuffs on the instrument as a whole. The gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.

The original black tolex hardshell case is included.
