Up for sale, a 1988 Gibson Les Paul Standard in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the "chainsaw" case. An uncommonly lightweight and lively example at only 9lbs 1oz, this early modern Standard features a very warm Heritage Cherry Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish. This Les Paul has traditional tonewood ingredients including a carved maple cap and solid, non-weight relieved mahogany body, with a certain sustain, punch, and fullness indicative of the early Standard models.

Of course the heart of this Standard is a fairly unique pickup pairing, with a Bill Lawrence designed Super Humbucker in the neck position, known colloquially as Gibson's "circuit board" pickups. This medium output pickup pairs very well with this particular Gibson and handles gain extremely well, delivering an articulate array of tones that are thick and punchy. The bridge pickup, also original, is one of GIbson's earliest 490Ts with a patent number baseplate and large screws anchoring the plate. The bridge pickup has a ripping growl and cut while also cleaning up well. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Les Paul Standard is dialed in with 10-46 strings, low action, and solid intonation.

The mahogany neck has a slender 60s-style C-shaped profile carve at the nut with appreciable depth and shoulder as you travel up the fingerboard, measuring .805" deep at the 1st fret and .970" at the 12th. On the bound rosewood fretboard, the original slender fretwire is very clean with good meat and crown, showing only very light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5. The guitar plays well in all positions, the neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and ideally adjusted. The scale length measures 24 3/4", and the nut is a full 1 11/16" in width. The headstock retains the original "Standard" truss rod cover and Gibson Deluxe tuning machines with aged buttons and light patina on the gear housings.

All of the electronics work as they should with untouched solder joints, and the unique Bill Lawrence/490T pickup pairing is quite unique, given the transitional nature of Gibson’s pickups in 1988-89. The chrome hardware is bright and clean, comprising a Nashville bridge and matching stopbar, and all of the original plastic is present including the quartet of gold speed knobs, cream pickup rings, pickguard, and switch surround.

The original nitro lacquer Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish is bold and saturated on the top, framed by ambered binding. Cosmetic wear includes a few finish scratches on the lower bout on top, buckle rash at the bass side waist on the back, and some additional dings and minor marks, mostly relegated to the back and lower bout body edge. There are a few spots of prominent lacquer checking on the back, and this checking extends along the neck profile, with wear through the clear coat on the treble side shoulder and at the nut on the bass side.

An extremely lightweight and easy-playing Les Paul, this Gibson has a slender profile carve, great pair of vintage Gibson humbuckers, and an uncommonly dark and rich Heritage Cherry Sunburst on the carved maple cap.

The original Gibson "chainsaw" case with blue plush interior is included. The case is missing its plastic Gibson badge on the exterior, and the latches are functional.
