Up for sale, a 1988 Gibson Les Paul Custom in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a modern Gibson Custom Shop Lifton-style hardshell case. With a dark Tobacco Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish, this Les Paul Custom comes from an increasingly heralded era of Gibson production, making the most of the classic combination of a solid mahogany body, carved three-piece maple top, one-piece mahogany neck and genuine ebony fretboard. Weighing 10lbs 6oz, the guitar delivers a bold, muscly acoustic voice with great warmth and treble articulation.

At the heart of this Les Paul Custom are a transitional pickup pair, with a Tim Shaw PAF in the neck position and a Bill Lawrence-designed Super Humbucker at the bridge, known colloquially as Gibson's "circuit board" pickup. The neck pickup has a clear, bell-like cut and warmth, while the medium output bridge pickup handles gain extremely well, delivering sonic authority and growl. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Les Paul Custom is dialed in with 10-46 strings, low action and solid intonation.

The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with generous shoulders in every register and more heft further up the fretboard, measuring .815” deep at the 1st fret and .965" at the 12th. The ebony fretboard sports pearl block inlay and original medium frets that have been leveled and crowned, currently showing no wear. The neck is straight, the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted, and the guitar plays cleanly in every register up the 24 3/4" scale. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock has all the classic appointments of a Les Paul Custom, with multi-ply binding, split diamond pearl inlay, and "Custom" truss rod cover. The original Gibson-branded gold-plated tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well with metal tulip buttons.

All of the electronics work as they should, and the CTS pots date to late '87 (aligning with the transitional pickup pair). The hardware includes the Nashville bridge and stopbar, and plastics comprise a quartet of modern black speed knobs, the original multi-ply pickguard, and switch surround and tip.

The gloss Tobacco Sunburst nitro lacquer finish highlights the very well-matched seams on the carved three-piece maple top, with pick scuffing across the strum path. The guitar exhibits a few isolated but fairly deep scratches on the back at the bass-side waist and extending to the lower bout. Wear is otherwise limited to a few shallow marks and fainter finish scratches on the body as a whole, and similar wear on the back and edges of the headstock. The smooth nitro gloss is retained on the neck profile, with a tiny bit of chatter central to the carve behind frets 1-5.

A modern Gibson Custom Shop Lifton-style brown hardshell case is included.
