Up for sale, a 1988 Fender Telecaster ‘67 vintage reissue “Sonny” model TL67-65SPL in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The only iteration ever offered by Fender of Keith Richard’s #2 Tele “Sonny,” this uncommon and long ago discontinued “Made in Japan” Telecaster was produced in limited numbers exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. While Keef’s “Micawber” Telecaster often gets the majority of the limelight, his “Sonny” Tele is an equally vital part of the Stones’ sound; this TL67-65SPL features a six-saddle brass bridge, traditional Tele (TL-Vintage) flat-pole bridge pickup, and full-size neck position Dragster humbucker with mounting ring.
Just like Richard’s own Tele, this TL67-65SPL features a maple neck with maple cap fretboard, paired with a white ash body. This guitar can easily deliver Keef’s cutting, powerful tones; offering a dynamic, nuanced response with ample midrange heft, snappy, sparkling highs, and Tele twang with the bridge pickup favored. Offering plenty of punch and sustain at 10lbs 5oz, this TL67-70SPL has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Shape: Medium C, measuring .845” 1st fret, .925” 12th fret
-Fretboard: Maple cap, 7 1/4” vintage-spec radius
-Frets: Slender, moderate wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-10
-Scale Length: 25 1/2”
-Nut: 1.650” (42mm), bone (modern)
-Tuners: Gotoh SG38
-Serialization: “Made in Japan,” H-prefix (peghead face)
Body Specs:
-Wood: White ash
-Pickups: Dragster humbucker x1, TL-Vintage single coil x1
-Controls: Volume, Tone, Three-way pickup selector
-Hardware: Six-saddle brass bridge, knurled knobs
-Plastics: One-ply five-screw matte black pickguard, ‘50s-spec switch tip
The gloss three-tone Sunburst finish exhibits subtle checking on the top and perimeter, and cosmetic wear is limited to some faint finish scratches and minor marks. The smooth gloss on the neck profile highlights subtle flame figuring in the maple, with a few shallow nicks in the lower registers that are not distracting to the palm while fretting.
The original Fender-branded gigbag is included.
