Up for sale, a 1988 Excel (Fuzzy) Jerry Bird S8 8-string console steel in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original telescoping legs and flight case. A small company founded in 1967, Excel/Fuzzy steels are handcrafted by master builder (and master steel guitar player) Mitsuo Fujii in Tachikawa City, Tokyo, Japan; the Excel/Fuzzy steels share some connective tissue with the Sho-Bud company (Fuzzy worked with Sho-Bud as early as 1974), responsible for the original Jerry Byrd models. The original Excel Jerry Byrd models were produced in 1986, making this a particularly early example, featuring a body crafted from solid rosewood with machined polished aluminum trim.
The construction yields stellar natural sustain and sparkle, with a cast aluminum playing surface. The single coil pickup is shimmering and sweet, with a warm, harmonically-rich midrange. The lows are taut and snappy, and there’s a smoothness to the treble response that's round with a clear, percussive cut. Additionally, the three-way Tone switch toggles between sharper, brighter sounds and a thicker, bassier feel. This Excel Jerry Byrd has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-50 roundwound strings.
The scale length measures 24 1/4“, and string spacing measures 2 1/6” at the nut and 2 3/4“ at the bridge. The playing surface features “Jerry Byrd” position markers, contrasting with the texture of the cast aluminum. The Gotoh tuners function reliably, and electronics comprise the single coil pickup with Master Volume and Tone controls, plus the three-way Tone switch. The wiring harness is untouched, with full-size Noble pots that date to ‘87 and ‘88. The telescoping legs can be configured either with four (one at each corner) legs or two central legs thanks to the added flanges, and the threads are all clean.
The polished aluminum accents are very clean, and the original pair of dome-topped knurled knobs are present. Further cosmetic touches include the Excel badge and “JB” shield on the treble-side edge. This steel is very well-kept, with just a scant few tiny marks on the gloss Black finish as a whole.
A rugged aluminum flight case with pink plush interior is included, along with the original quartet of telescoping legs and the original Japanese cleaning cloth.
