Up for sale, a 1987 Rickenbacker 1998PT Pete Townshend signature model in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case, manual and case candy. One of the earliest Rickenbacker artist models, the 1998PT was an extremely limited run of only 250 guitars.
The 1998PT model replicates the features of the model made by Ric exclusively for distribution by Rose Morris in the UK, sporting a distinctive traditional F hole instead of the "cats eye" variety seen on the Rics offered in the US market. Offering sparkling cleans, cutting chime and rich overdriven cut, the trio of higher output Toaster Top single coil pickups yield a bevy of traditional Ric tonalities. The semi-hollow maple body ensures both the sonic immediacy of this tonewood and the breadth and warmth of the semi-hollow construction. Weighing 7lbs 8oz, this Rickenbacker benefits from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The three-piece maple/walnut neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and rolled edges on the thick slab rosewood fretboard, measuring .820" at the 1st fret and .875" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has dot inlay and flawless slender fretwire, playing cleanly up the straight neck with responsive, optimally adjusted truss rods. The nut measures 1.650" in width, and on the headstock, the lucite Ric truss rod cover/logo is intact along with Schaller-made Kluson-style tuning machines which work smoothly and hold pitch well.
All of the electronics function as intended, and everything is exactly how it was when the guitar left the Rickenbacker factory with untouched solder joints. The CTS pots date to the 48th week of 1986, and the E0-prefix serial number on the mono jack plate dates to May of 1987. The chrome-plated hardware is positively gleaming in its presentation, including the "R" tailpiece, bridge with original cover, and trio of Toaster Top pickup covers. Plastics include the pointer knobs and unique Pete Townshend - Limited Edition pickguard (which has yellowed, as is very common with this model).
The gloss Fireglo finish highlights light birdseye figuring on the two-piece maple back, and cosmetic wear includes one small finish chip at the treble side waist, and a few additional small touched-up chips on the body edge (bass-side body horn on the face, bass-side lower bout on the back). Wear is otherwise limited to a few tiny marks and faint finish scratches on the body as a whole.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included, along with the manual, polish cloth, and secondary upper pickguard.
