Up for sale a 1987 Gibson Les Paul Standard in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A stunning instrument with a highly figured bookmatched two-piece flame maple carved top and Heritage Cherry Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish, this Les Paul is also uncommonly lightweight and lively at only 8lbs 10oz.
This guitar truly delivers everything you want in a good Les Paul, and the traditional tonewood complement includes the solid mahogany body, mahogany neck, and carved maple cap. The guitar is loaded with a pair of aftermarket '57 Classic PAFs humbuckers, and these pickups are wax potted with Alnico II magnets, retaining the original PAF stickers on the baseplates. The pickups in this Les Paul translate the instrument's clear acoustic voice into a powerful array of big, crisp voicings. The bridge pickup has the growl, midrange cut, and dynamic clarity you’d expect, while the neck pickup is girthy and thick while still retaining enough clarity and definition to pair with your favorite fuzz box without getting muddy. Additionally, the pickups clean up decently when backing off the volume a touch, and the tone controls are equally as responsive. This Gibson has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The mahogany neck has a 60s-style slender C profile carve at the nut with notably more roundness and heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and .980" at the 12th. The original slender fretwire is intact with its full factory height, showing only very light wear, primarily beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-10. The guitar plays cleanly in all positions, and the truss rod is responsive and ideally adjusted. The nut has Gibson's traditional 1 11/16" width, and the rosewood fretboard sports pearl trapezoid inlays. The headstock retains the original "Standard" truss rod cover, and the guitar has the original bolt bushing Gibson Deluxe tuning machines with greened tulip buttons.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the '57 Classic PAF pickups with nickel covers are wired to the original harness which features CTS pots that date to the 47th week of 1986. The chrome hardware is practically perfect, and all of the original plastic is present and near mint including the amber speed knobs, cream pickup rings, pickguard, and switch surround.
The original nitro lacquer Heritage Cherry Sunburst gloss finish highlights the tight, straight bookmatched tiger flame which extends evenly across the top and is particularly deep and dimensional behind the bridge. Cosmetic wear is limited to a spot of buckle rash central to the waist on the back, and just a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole. The top shows only a few shallow stray nicks and presents very well.
The original Gibson "chainsaw" case with blue plush interior is included.
