Up for sale, a 1987 Fender “ExTrad” Stratocaster ‘54 vintage reissue model ST54-140 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a tweed hardshell case. An extremely faithful analog to a genuine ‘50s Strat, this ExTrad has the most heavily figured flame maple neck we’ve ever seen on a Fender Japan instrument, with plenty of natural playwear for a worked-in feel. The maple neck and straight-grained ash body are finished in nitro lacquer, and this early ExTrad model represents the absolute top tier of Fender Japan during the golden age of "Made in Japan" production. Exceedingly rare, these instruments were designed to be sold in the Japanese domestic market and are uncommon even within their country of origin.
A true Custom Shop offering, the ExTrad instruments were made to order with features that paralleled Fender's USA Custom Shop output. Established by Makoto Sugimoto, who benefitted from a quarter century of experience in R&D, custom guitar building, and engineering at Fujigen, the ExTrad instruments were produced by a small team of expert craftspeople, representing Fender Japan's absolute best. This premium instrument line was first offered in 1986 and was retired in 1994.
The electronics have all been upgraded, save for the original three-way pickup selector, with a trio of Seymour Duncan SSL-1 single coils wired to 250k CTS pots. These pickups are designed to recreate the sound of a ‘50s Strat, featuring staggered Alnico V pole pieces, black bobbin flatwork and cloth-covered leads. The bridge pickup has ample sparkle and bounce, and the neck pickup has a throaty fullness while remaining articulate. This “ExTrad” Stratocaster ST54-140 weighs 9lbs 3oz, benefitting from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The gloss on the neck profile has a smooth, broken-in feel, fast and effortless in the palm.
