Up for sale, a 1986 Yamaha SA1300 Super Axe in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original faux leather gigbag. One of the best examples of premium Japanese craftsmanship put to the task of improving upon American design, the SA1300 uses Gibson's ES-335 as a template.
The semi-hollow body features birch/beech construction with an alder center block, paired with a one-piece mahogany neck capped with a bound rosewood fretboard for a tonewood combination that's full-sounding, airy, articulate, and versatile. The humbuckers feature Alnico II magnet construction, and the neck pickup is rich and full while retaining excellent top end clarity. The bridge pickup, in contrast, has a warm growl with an immediacy and bite. This Yamaha weighs 8lbs 3oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .890” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard is a notably dark cut with a 12” radius, and the stock medium jumbo fretwire is practically perfect, playing cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures a full 1 11/16” in width, and on the headstock, the original Yamaha-branded metal tulip button chrome tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
All of the electronics function as intended, with a three-way pickup selector toggle and dedicated Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup. The humbuckers have original date stamps on their baseplates, dating this instrument to the 61st year of the Showa period (1986). The chrome-plated Nashville-style bridge and stopbar still have plenty of shine, and original plastics comprise the raised two-ply black pickguard and quartet of knobs, which have ridged grips for easy on-the-fly adjustments.
The transparent gloss Persimmon Red finish is framed by cream body binding, and the guitar is extremely well-kept. Cosmetic wear is limited to just a handful of minor dings on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the lower bout body edge. The neck profile also retains its smooth gloss, free of palm wear with a scant few shallow marks along the profile length that have no impact on playability.
The original faux leather gigbag is included.
