Up for sale, a 1986 Fender Stratocaster ‘72 vintage reissue model ST72-55 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Produced in the golden age of “Made in Japan” production at the much-revered Fujigen factory, this Strat was marketed exclusively to the Japanese market and is rarely seen outside its country of origin.Tonewoods include a basswood body and one-piece maple neck, yielding a balanced, smooth acoustic profile with plenty of clarity and treble cut. The trio of alnico magnet pickups include the original Fender Japan single coils in the neck and middle positions, and an upgraded Fender 57/62 black bobbin single coil in the bridge position. Coupled to a five-way switch, each pickup position offers a distinct voice. The neck pickup offers a bell-like chime and ideal warmth, with thinned-out squawk in positions 2 and 4, and a sparkling sound in the bridge position with plenty of spank and bounce. This Strat weighs 7lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation. The one-piece maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .925” at the 12th. The maple fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4” radius and retains the stock slender fretwire. The frets retain their full factory height, showing moderate wear beneath the strings on frets 1-5 with progressively lighter wear beneath the plain strings extending to the octave. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 42mm (1.650") in width, and the large headstock features an era-accurate block Fender logo, E-prefix serial, and bullet truss rod nut. The chrome Fender Japan-branded Gotoh tuners turn smoothly and hold stable pitch. The low E tuner retains the “55” sticker on the gear housing, denoting both the model tier and the price in yen when sold new (55,000 yen). The ”Made in Japan” stamp is present above the three-bolt “F”-embossed neck plate, and the factory model stamps are present in the neck pocket and on the heel. All the electronics function as intended, with the trio of alnico magnet pickups wired to the original full-size pots (dated to September of 1986) and governed by a five-way selector switch and standard Volume/Tone/Tone control array. Hardware includes the vibrato with full-size tremolo block and ‘70s-style block saddles, and the unit actuates smoothly, currently setup with three springs. The chrome plating on the hardware has plenty of shine with just a dusting of patina, and plastics include the three-ply white pickguard and deeply yellowed pickup covers and knobs. The gloss Olympic White finish is a pitch perfect shade of this classic custom color, showing only a touch of graceful yellowing of the clear coat. Cosmetic wear includes a number of minor dings and bumps, primarily along the top and back body edges, as well as wear central to the waist on the back, shy of full-on “buckle rash.” The ambered gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and clean with the exception of a pair of minor marks on the bass-side of the carve behind frets 1-2 that have no impact on playability.A Fender-branded padded gigbag is included.
