Up for sale, a 1986 Fender Precision Bass ‘57 vintage reissue model PB57-55 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, upgraded to include a Jazz Bass single coil pickup in the bridge position for a versatile PJ pickup complement. Produced at the venerable Fujigen factory during the golden age of Fender Japan, this “Made in Japan” Precision Bass features vintage-accurate touches including a pencil-dated neck heel and full-size tuner baseplates.Tonewoods include a basswood body and a one-piece maple neck; this bass has a smooth and neutral natural acoustic profile, suited to the versatility of the pickup complement. The stock split-coil P pickup delivers ample thump and heft, and the added Jazz Bass single coil has ceramic magnet construction and adjustable hex poles, yielding plenty of midrange burp and authoritative growl. A discreet three-way mini toggle pickup selector has also been added to the wiring harness, singling out the pickups or blending them for a particularly potent sound. This bass weighs 9lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation. The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with generous, inviting shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .945” at the 12th. The stock slender fretwire is in great shape, with well-rounded crowns, only showing a hint of wear beneath the strings on frets 1-4. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock nut measures 1.650” (42mm) in width. The headstock features nickel-plated tuners with clover buttons and full-size baseplates, showing consistent surface patina. The neck heel and pocket retain the factory model stamps, and the heel is pencil dated 12-9-86. The “Made in Japan” text and E-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate. All of the electronics function as intended, with the pickups governed by Master Volume and Tone controls plus an added three-way pickup selector toggle. The original full-size Japanese pots date to ‘86, and there is a small additional route in the control cavity to accommodate the pickup selector mini toggle. The Jazz Bass pickup route was well executed, with only a tiny amount of finish touch-up on the perimeter of the route. Hardware includes the chrome-plated flat-topped knurled knobs and bridge with steel barrel saddles. Plastics include a replacement three-ply black pickguard.Cosmetic wear on the gloss Black finish includes a number of minor dings on the lower bout on the back and to a lesser extent on top, and some faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss. The neck profile retains its smooth ambered gloss.A Gator-brand gigbag is included.
