Up for sale, a 1985 Greco EGC68-50 "Black Beauty" LP Custom electric guitar in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. Crafted in Japan's famed Fujigen factory as part of Greco's Mint Collection offered in the '80s, this lawsuit era LP truly delivers the goods, with incredible attention to vintage Gibson spec. And while no legal action was taken against Greco for these guitars, Gibson did commission the same factory to make their "Orville" line of instruments which were exclusively sold within Japan.
Clearly a direct response to the '68 Les Paul Custom, this model features a carved maple cap on a mahogany body, long neck tenon, "Screamin" PAF pickups, braided pickup leads, full-size pots, and a hand-carved bone nut. It's an extremely lively and powerful sounding instrument, and the craftsmanship is evident in the great playability and classic range of Les Paul tones. The bridge pickup has a complex and detailed sound, with a touch of growl, sweet midrange, and focused bass response. The neck position humbucker delivers more girth and fullness while still being clear and present, and it's an ideal sound for saturated lead lines. Weighing 9lbs 4oz, this moderate weight Greco balances well on a strap and has a big, ringing natural projection. We've had this guitar professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with slinky action, solid intonation, and 10-46 strings.
The neck has a slender '60s-style C-shaped profile carve with modest shoulder and a fast, effortless feel, measuring .790” deep at the 1st fret and .905” at the 12th. The neck features a bound rosewood fretboard, pearloid block inlay, and original medium jumbo fretwire. The frets are practically perfect with their full factory height and plenty of meat, showing just a touch of wear on the crowns of frets 1-2, and virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The guitar plays cleanly in all registers, the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted, and the fretboard sports a 12” radius. The scale length is 24 3/4”, and the original hand-carved bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the guitar features a small volute, multi-ply binding, Greco-branded gold keystone button tuners, and clean pearl inlays that vaguely mimic Gibson's split diamond look.
All of the electronics work as they should, with original pots and tone caps, as well as the same high quality braided pickup leads seen on any Gibson. The full-size Japanese pots date to 1985, and the pickups retain the original “Scream’in 1982” PAF-style stickers on the baseplates. The gold hardware shows notable surface patina on the pickup covers, ABR-1-style bridge and stoptail, and the original plastic parts comprise a quartet of witch hat knobs, a multi-ply black pickguard, black pickup rings, and switch surround. Cosmetic wear is limited to sparse vertical finish checking, with a few light finish scratches and minor marks on the body as a whole. The neck profile sports the original pristine gloss finish.
A vintage rectangular black tolex hardshell case is included. The case features black leather ends, functional latches, and the original handle, with a couple white spray paint marks on the case lid.
