Up for sale, a 1984 Gibson SG Standard in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with hardshell case. Loaded with the original "Tarback" humbuckers, which have a different magnet structure and fewer winds than a T Top, this pickup pair is an ideal paring for the SG's solid mahogany construction. Coupled with the black epoxy that gave these humbuckers their name and ensures great feedback rejection by suppressing microphonics, the Tarbacks are a lively, sparkling pickup pair. Plugged in, the bridge pickup has a surprising twang and clarity, yet with a smooth top end, while the middle and neck positions have plenty of warmth and girthy bass response. Lightweight at 7lbs, this guitar is very acoustically resonant too. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, low action and spot-on intonation, this SG has a tone that roars with the best of them, delivering a sound that is undeniably classic Gibson.
The mahogany neck has a slender, fast-feeling C-shaped profile carve at the nut with notable roundness and shoulder as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .795" deep at the 1st fret and .950" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard features small block inlay, retaining the original medium jumbo fretwire with its factory wide/flat fret dress. The frets have good meat, showing only very light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5. The guitar plays cleanly in every register, the neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and ideally adjusted. The scale length is 24 3/4", and the nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, notable as most SGs from the previous decade did not have this feature (instead measuring a more slender 1 9/16"). On the headstock, the original Gibson Deluxe double line tuning machines are intact with lightly greened tulip buttons.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots that date back to mid '81, stock tone caps, and Switchcraft pickup selector toggle and unique barrel side jack. The original Nashville bridge and stopbar tailpiece are intact, and the chrome hardware has plenty of shine with just a speckling of patina. All of the original plastic parts are present including the quartet of black speed knobs, pickup rings, and pickguard. The Cherry nitro lacquer gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and cosmetic wear includes a few dings on top on the lower bout, some small finish chips on the body perimeter, and a couple spots of buckle rash on the back with some additional ancillary marks. The gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth, with a tiny bit of wear in the clear coat central to the carve.
A Gibson brown tolex hardshell case with pink plush interior is included.
