Up for sale, a 1983 Fender Jazz Bass ‘62 vintage reissue model JB62-115 in perfect working order, complete with a molded hardshell case. Produced in the second year of Fender Japan production, this "Japanese Vintage" (JV) series bass is a rare top-tier model accurate to the Jazz Bass’s introductory specs with “stack knob” Volume/Tone pairs, the same pickups used on the Fender USA Fullerton factory reissues from the same year, and a three-tone Sunburst nitro lacquer finish.
Produced at the Fujigen factory during the golden age of Fender Japan production, tonewoods include an alder body, maple neck, and slab rosewood fingerboard. This JB62-115 has a resonant, round acoustic response, and the pickups feature alnico magnets and cloth-covered leads. The USA-made pickups from Fender’s Fullerton factory feature gray fiber bobbins in the neck position, while the bridge pickup has the rarely seen (and coveted) red bobbins.
The bass offers plenty of midrange growl and treble grind; rolling back the Tone knobs yields a pillowy, thick thump that retains definition, and the stacked controls enable a level of tonal control not available with the standard three-knob configuration. This JB62-115 weighs 9lbs 2oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Shape: Slender U, measuring .755” 1st fret, .945” 12th fret
-Fretboard: Rosewood slab, 7 1/4” vintage-spec radius, dot inlay
-Frets: Slender, leveled and crowned, faint wear on 1-3
-Scale Length: 34”
-Nut: 1 1/2”, bone
-Tuners: Clover button, long stems, reverse-gear (vintage-spec)
-Serialization: “Made in Japan,” JV-prefix (neck plate)
-Factory Markings: Model tier stamps on neck heel/pocket, neck heel pencil dated 5-27-83
Body Specs:
-Wood: Alder
-Pickups: Red bobbin single coil x1, gray bobbin x1 (1982 date stamps on bobbins)
-Harness: CTS pots date to 18th and 28th weeks of 1982
-Controls: Volume/Tone x2 (stacked)
-Hardware: Bridge with spiral (threaded) saddles, knurled knobs
-Plastics: Four-ply brown tortoise pickguard
The gloss three-tone Sunburst nitro lacquer finish includes concentrated buckle wear on the back of the treble-side cutaway, with more subtle buckle rash at the belly contour, and some small dings along the perimeter. There are a few cleanly doweled holes forward of the bridge (presumably from a different bridge or mute option), and the chrome “ashtray” bridge/pickup covers are genuine aftermarket Fender Pure Vintage components. The ambered nitro gloss on the neck profile is smooth and clean, highlighting a touch of birdseye figuring in the maple.
An SKB molded hardshell case is included.
