Up for sale, a 1982 Tokai Hard Puncher model PJ48 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This Tokai is an expertly crafted Japanese instrument, evoking everything we love about a classic Jazz Bass in terms of nut width and neck carve, paired with the PJ pickup configuration.

A black-on-black iteration of the Hard Puncher similar to the Fender-branded model Duff McKagan made famous with Guns N' Roses, there's a great range of tones available on this PJ, with a smooth, round natural quality when played unplugged. The Jazz bridge pickup has lots of growl and midrange character, and the Precision pickup delivers power and thump, while retaining a treble-centric aggression accentuated by a set of 50-120 roundwound strings. The bass weighs 8lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a medium depth U-shaped profile carve with full shoulders in every register, measuring .820" deep at the 1st fret and .985" at the 12th. On the thick slab rosewood fretboard, the slender frets show only light wear beneath the A and D strings on the crowns of frets 1-5, with virtually no wear further up the board. The bass plays cleanly in all registers and conforms to traditional Jazz Bass specifications with a 34" scale and easily navigable 1 1/2" nut width. The matching Black headstock features chrome clover button tuning machines that turn smoothly and hold pitch well with just a dusting of surface patina. On the back of the neck, the original model 48 sticker is still mostly present at the heel above the serialized four-bolt neck plate.

All of the electronics work as intended, with individual knurled Volume knobs for each pickup and a Master Tone control. Hardware includes the bridge with threaded saddles, and the chrome plating is positively gleaming. The gloss Black finish shows some faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the body as a whole, along with a few additional minor nicks almost exclusively relegated to the back and body perimeter. The gloss finish on the neck profile is clean and smooth.
