Up for sale, a 1982 Rhodes Stage 73 Mk II electric piano in excellent condition and good working order. This piano is a reliable stage and studio instrument with great action and a range of classic Rhodes tonalities. The tone and feel of the Mk II pianos is like nothing that came before or after. The sound is warm, dynamic, and the perfect blend of midrange fullness and top end chime. This piano has been professionally voiced, with smooth transitions from the lower, growly bass octaves to the bell-like notes in the highest registers. The middle octaves are voiced slightly favoring the harmonic overtones, which keeps complex chord voicings clear and balanced. The low end ranges from mellow, round bass notes with a soft touch to the famous Rhodes growl when you really dig in.
The action is quick and consistent, representative of the feel of the Mk II pianos, with a fast attack that isn't sloppy, and since the action assembly is plastic, there's no danger of key bushings wearing out and growing either tight or loose over time. The harp is extremely clean with bright tone bars and tines, and the original hammer tips and damper felts are all present and functional with modest wear. The bold date stamp in the upper right corner of the harp translates to the 39th week of 1982.
The original smooth black tolex is clean overall, with one repaired tear on the back which has been glued flush with the frame. The key caps are nice and bright, with very little yellowing or aging, and the caps are the more desirable flat caps introduced in '75. The namerail retains the original small Rhodes logo, and the flat black plastic harp cover introduced on the Mk II is also intact, allowing the player to easily stack another keyboard on top of their Rhodes. The control plate has the original skirted knobs, and on the back of the piano, the large Rhodes logo is fully intact with some light scuffing.
This piano is very presentable and would look great in a studio, complete with a vintage Rhodes sustain pedal and a full complement of new chrome-plated legs and braces courtesy of Vintage Vibe.
