Up for sale, a 1982 G&L SC-3 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. As the third instrument company founded by Leo Fender, G&L's instruments benefit from Fender's decades of experience at Music Man and (of course) Fender. This SC-3 is a first year example, with the shorter bass-side body horn and slab body design only offered from 1982-83.
The trio of MDF single coil pickups have ample sparkle on tap, with a touch more midrange heft than most designs; the bridge delivers ample spanky snarl and twang, and the neck has a smoother, bell-like fullness to the sound. This SC-3 weighs 7lbs 9oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The one-piece maple neck has a very slender C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .770” deep at the 1st fret and .905” at the 12th. The fretboard has a 9 1/2“ radius and medium jumbo fretwire that's in great shape, showing light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-7. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures just a hair shy of 1 5/8“ in width. The headstock sports a bullet truss rod, and the stock G&L-embossed Schaller-made tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch with clean chrome plating.
All of the electronics function as intended, with the trio of MDF single coils governed by a five-way selector switch and Master Volume and Tone controls. The original CTS Volume pot dates to the 27th week of 1982, and the Tone pot is a push/pull replacement, enabling the bridge and neck pickups to be engaged together. The chrome plating on the bridge is notably clean, and the plastics include the original barrel knobs.
The gloss Black finish exhibits vertical checking, and cosmetic wear includes a number of minor dings on the lower bout on top and along the body perimeter, as well as a few light finish scratches on the back. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included.
