Up for sale, a 1982 Fender '57 Precision Bass JV-series model PB57-70 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Fender Japan's first year model from the JV (Japanese Vintage) series, this bass hails from the golden age of Fender Japan production and is an exceedingly rare example.
Produced concurrently with the very first Fullerton factory Fender reissues in the USA, this JV model has hardware crafted to exacting vintage spec, a black bobbin split coil pickup, two-tone gloss Sunburst finish and a very vintage-correct neck profile carve, offering slightly more depth than Fender's Fullerton-era neck shapes.
Initially sold only within Japan, this JV series Precision Bass has a resonant alder body and round, dynamic acoustic voice with plenty of broad, muscly tone and pillowy thump through the original black bobbin pickup with correct raised A pole pieces, delivering the articulation and treble detail afforded the maple fretboard. Well-balanced and quite lightweight at 8lbs 8oz, we've dialed in this '57 Precision Bass here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh roundwound 45-100 strings, comfortable action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut with moderate shoulder and faintly rolled fretboard edges. The profile has a gentle increase in overall roundness and heft further up the fretboard, measuring .795” deep at the 1st fret and .965” at the 12th. The gloss-finished maple fretboard is extremely clean, and the original slender frets are practically perfect with their full factory height and well-rounded crowns. The fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4" radius, with a full 34" scale length and 42.5mm (1.675") wide nut. The neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. On the headstock, the original tuning machines are intact. Virtually identical to their Pre-CBS forbearers, these tuners have long stems, clover buttons, full-size baseplates, and reverse-gear functionality. The neck heel is pencil dated 6-9-82, just like a genuine late-50s Fender.
The electronics function as intended, with untouched solder joints, cloth-covered leads used throughout, full-size pots that date March of '82, and the original black bobbin pickup with raised A pole pieces, matching spec for 1957-58. The chrome-plated hardware has plenty of shine including the bridge with spiral saddles, domed knurled knobs, and neck plate with JV-prefix serial number. The original white one-ply pickguard is intact, and there is some pick scuffing across the guard and extending to the bass-side body waist. A gold anodized Pure Vintage Fender USA pickguard can also be installed at the new owner's discretion for an additional charge.
The gloss two-tone Sunburst finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, exhibiting light buckle rash at the treble-side waist on the back, with some additional scuffing across the neck plate and some small dings and light finish scratches on the body as a whole. The ambered gloss finish on the neck profile is nigh flawless. The bass does have a light smokey smell, as does the gigbag, and the smell dissipates considerably from the instrument when it's been out of its bag for some time.
A vintage form-fit faux leather gigbag is included.
