Up for sale, a 1982 Aria Pro II Thor Sound TSB-550 vintage neck-through bass in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, finished in an exceedingly rare Red gloss. Produced at the Matsumoku factory in Japan, the TSB-550 is a top-quality instrument crafted with elegant seven-ply neck through body construction and loaded with a centrally located MB-III humbucker.
The neck through maple/walnut construction is mated to ash body wings and capped with a slab rosewood fingerboard for a rich, complex tone with near endless sustain that marries the immediate response of maple with the midrange fullness and note attack of ash. The brass nut and robustly built brass bridge add further articulation and top-end growl to the sound, qualities accentuated by a set of 45-105 roundwound strings. And with the two-way Dual Sound switch offering series/parallel operation of the humbucker coils, the TSB-550 is an impressive instrument indeed. Weighing 9lbs 14oz, this TSB-550 has loads of natural sustain and resonance, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple/walnut neck has a medium D-shaped profile carve with round shoulders, measuring .850” at the 1st fret and .925” at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard features pearloid diamond inlays and the original flawless medium jumbo fretwire which retains its full factory height and well-rounded crowns. The bass plays well in every register up the 32 1/2” scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The brass nut measures 1 3/4" in width. On the headstock, the TBS-550 features chrome-plated Aria Pro II-branded tuners that turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
All the electronics function as intended, with the MB-III pickup governed by Master Volume and Tone controls, and the “Dual Sound” two-way mini toggle switch. The positively over-built bridge is inset into the body with Aria’s proprietary “Quick-Hook” system for easy string changes and maximum stability.
Cosmetic wear on the gloss Red finish is limited to some requisite scuffing along the pick path, as well as some light scratches in the gloss on the back and lower bout on top, and one tiny ding on the body edge adjacent to the recessed input jack. The gloss finish on the neck profile is immaculate.
A vintage Japanese brown faux leather gigbag is included.
