Up for sale, a 1981 Tokai LS120 Love Rock in perfect working order, complete with the original brown tolex Lifton-style hardshell case. Crafted with the utmost quality and considered among the finest vintage Japanese LPs ever produced, this early Tokai Love Rock Model LS120 features a nitro lacquer Trans Amber gloss finish over a heavily figured carved maple top, with a select African mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck topped with a bound rosewood fingerboard, and the original pair of Dimarzio PAF humbuckers.Sonically, this Tokai offers an array of classic LP tones, with the double cream bobbin humbuckers reading at the higher end of the typical PAF range at 7.7k ohms, resulting in loads of top end detail and harmonic complexity. The neck pickup is fat and round while retaining ample clarity, and the bridge pickup has great cut and growl. Acoustically, the guitar has a clear, barking quality, lightweight for an LP-style instrument at 9lbs 1 oz and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action and accurate intonation. The one-piece mahogany neck has a very chunky C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder, representative of a 1959 neck shape and just shy of full “baseball bat” dimensions, measuring .885” deep at the 1st fret and .990” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features fret edge binding and pearloid trapezoid inlay, with original medium jumbo frets are in exceptional condition, showing only very light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-2. The scale length is a full 24 3/4", and the nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The headstock features an open book shape, Tokai inlay, Love Rock gold silkscreen script, and a modern set of Kluson-style tuners that match vintage spec with lightly greened keystone buttons, push-in bushing, and lightly patina’d gold plating. All the electronics work as intended, with Volume and Tone knobs for each of the DiMarzio humbuckers and the distinctive circuit board wiring harness used in this era. Hardware includes an ABR-1 Tune-o-Matic bridge and corresponding stopbar, with uniform patina across the nickel plating. Plastics comprise a replacement quartet of amber bonnet knobs, with cream pickup rings and switch surround and an amber switch tip.The two-piece carved maple cap is finished in Trans Amber, highlighting deep, dimensional curly maple figuring, bordering on quilted maple in its presentation. The guitar shows honest playwear including buckle rash across the back, chipping through the finish on the back bass-side lower bout body edge, and various nicks and dings on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the back. The top presents very well, with much more restrained wear. The neck profile retains its gloss finish, free of palm wear, with a number of small dings along the length of the profile, none of which impact playabilityThe original Lifton-style hardshell case is included with a brown mottled exterior and pink form-fit interior. All of the original latches are intact, as is the stock handle and the small Tokai badge.
