Up for sale, a 1981 Tokai Love Rock LS50 BB in excellent condition and perfect working order, finished in gloss Ebony and complete with the original hardshell case. Produced during the golden age of Japanese guitar craftsmanship, this Tokai does an excellent job of recreating the specs and feel of a vintage LP Standard.

Just like its American counterparts, this LS50 features a mahogany body, maple top, and mahogany neck capped with a rosewood fingerboard, yielding a rich acoustic resonance. The original humbuckers with double cream bobbins are made by Gotoh, metering at 8.5k ohms. These pickups are dynamic, articulate, and very well-balanced; from a clear and growly bridge pickup to a warm, rich neck humbucker with sweet, bell-like top end, this Tokai easily covers the tonal ground of an LP Standard. This Tokai weighs 8lbs 6oz, notably lightweight for an LP-style instrument, professionally set up here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.

The mahogany neck has a modestly chunky C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders, measuring .850” deep at the 1st fret and .960” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearl trapezoid inlay and practically perfect medium jumbo fretwire which retains its full factory height and well-rounded crowns, only showing light wear on the crowns beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4” scale, with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original bone nut measures 1 11/16” in width, and the headstock sports the classic “open book” shape, featuring gold “Love Rock” script and Tokai inlay. The original Tokai Deluxe Kluson-style single line tuners with lightly greened keystone buttons turn smoothly and hold pitch reliably with clean nickel plating.

On the body, all the original electronics work exactly as intended, with individual Volume and Tone knobs for each humbucker as well as a three-way pickup selector switch. The solder joints are untouched, with full-size pots and the distinctive circuit board wiring seen on early Tokais. Hardware includes an ABR-1 style bridge and corresponding stopbar tailpiece, the latter of which shows some flaking of its chrome finish. Plastics include the original cream pickguard and quartet of amber bonnet knobs, all of which are in remarkably good shape.

Cosmetic wear on the Ebony gloss finish includes an area of buckle rash central to the waist and some light finish scratches mostly relegated to the back. The top of the guitar is in excellent shape, with a bit of requisite scuffing along the pick path, as well as some minuscule dings behind the bridge. The gloss finish on the neck is clean and smooth along the profile length with only a couple minor marks.

The original black tolex hardshell case with green plush interior is included. The case features functional latches, the original leather handle, and small Tokai badge.
