1981 Tokai Hard Puncher PB48 P-Bass Vintage Electric Bass Guitar Black, Japan

Up for sale, a 1981 Tokai Hard Puncher P-Bass PB48 model in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original faux leather gigbag. Evoking everything we love about the Fender Precision Bass, this Tokai is a rare, early Japanese-made iteration with a lightweight alder body, chunky maple neck, and traditional "PB-Dynamic" split coil pickup. The Hard Puncher has a clear note attack, sweet, defined midrange, and low end that really thumps. Well-balanced on a strap, this Tokai punches above its weight at 8lbs 9oz. We've had this Tokai dialed in to play its best here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 45-105 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a full-feeling and notably chunky C-shaped profile carve with round shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .915" deep at the 1st fret and 1.015" at the 12th. The frets are just shy of medium jumbo in width with their full factory height, showing only light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-5 and playing cleanly in all registers up the straight neck with an ideally adjusted and responsive truss rod. The scale length is a full 34", and the nut measures 1 5/8" in width. The headstock has the distinctive Fender-style shape seen on the earliest iterations of the Hard Puncher, along with a "spaghetti" Tokai logo and clover button tuners that turn very smoothly. There is a very small repaired split at the headstock corner just below the E tuner baseplate which poses no structural issue. The four-bolt neck plate is embossed with the serial number, and the small PB48 model sticker is retained above the plate.

The simple electronics function as intended, with Volume and Tone controls mounted to a three-ply black pickguard. The knurled chrome knobs are clean, and the original four-saddle top loader bridge shows only a touch of patina. Cosmetic wear is limited to light scattered marks and scuffs on the gloss Black finish mostly relegated to the perimeter of the body, with requisite pick scuffing on the guard. The neck sports a pristine smooth gloss finish.

The original fitted faux leather gigbag is included.
