Up for sale, a 1981 Martin HD-28 Custom Prewar Reissue, fully serviced and complete with the original hardshell case and commemorative plaque. This rare Martin faithfully captures the appearance and tonal response of a circa 1930s D-28, featuring herringbone purfling and scalloped X-bracing. This D-28 benefits from the service due an instrument of its vintage including a professional neck reset, bridge reglue, replacement pickguard, full refret, and new compensated bone saddle.
Tonewoods include a tight-grained Sitka spruce top, solid East Indian rosewood back/sides, mahogany neck, and ebony fingerboard. This Martin has a warm, relaxed tone befitting a guitar that's had decades to open up and resonate beyond what one expects of a new instrument, with a notably punchy, immediate upper-midrange response that translates to full-yet-detailed chording and sweet, sparkling single note lines. Balanced across all strings and in all registers, this Martin has a woody, percussive quality and high volume ceiling, with limited compression when digging in hard with a flatpick. This HD-28 Custom Prewar Reissue weighs 4lbs 8oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Mahogany
-Shape: Medium V, measuring .830” 1st fret, .975” 9th fret
-Fretboard: Ebony, notched square and diamond inlays
-Frets: Slender, refret, no wear
-Scale Length: 25.4”
-Nut: 1 11/16”
-Tuners: Kluson-style “no-line”
-Serialization: Stamp on Custom edition neck block plaque dates to ‘81
Body Specs:
-Wood: Sitka spruce, East Indian rosewood
-Bracing: X, scalloped
-Bridge: Ebony belly, compensated bone saddle (modern)
-Plastics: Tortoise pickguard (replacement, original included)
-Marquetry: Grained ivoroid binding and heelcap, herringbone purfling
The lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, with one short, professionally repaired split on top at the bass-side lower bout. There is pick wear across the soundhole and extending beyond the guard, an area of buckle worming on the back at the waist, and some minor dings and scuffs consistent with use. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is smooth and clean, with just a couple shallow nicks along the spine that are not distracting to the palm while fretting. A different tuner set was also at one time installed, with traditional push-in bushings now fitted and singular small mounting holes from the non-original tuners cleanly doweled and touched-up.
The original molded hardshell case is included, along with the serialized commemorative plaque and the original pickguard.
