Up for sale, a 1981 Hamer Prototype 2 Coil in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Among the rarest original Hamer models ever produced, the 2 Coil iteration of Hamer’s Prototype features two single coil pickups in the bridge and middle positions (instead of the standard bridge position triple coil). According to Frank Untermyer, a Hamer partner and the company treasurer in the ‘80s, about 20 Prototype 2 Coils were produced, intended as an exclusive model for a music store and Hamer distributor in Bielefeld, Germany. After the German shop failed to pay Hamer for the instruments, however, they were distributed to a select handful of stores (including a few in the United States), and never saw any further production.

Tonewoods include a mahogany body, flame maple top, mahogany neck, and rosewood fretboard, offering plenty of natural midrange warmth, fundamental punch and treble cut. The pair of single coil pickups are spanky and punchy, with plenty of body and and upper-midrange honk. The bridge pickup has great immediacy and bite, with a smoother, broader tonal quality when toggling towards the “neck” pickup. This Prototype 2 Coil weighs 7lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The gloss Natural finish highlights the ripples of curly figuring in the flame maple, extending evenly across the top, and cosmetic wear on this guitar is limited to a few small dings along the lower bout perimeter and a few light scratches on the back well short of “buckle rash.” The nitro gloss on the neck profile is flawless.

The original black tolex hardshell case is included.
