Up for sale, a 1980s Yamaha DX7 in mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original carrying case. Freshly serviced by Synapse Audio Systems, this synth has had all internal contacts thoroughly cleaned, fitted with a new battery and loaded with stock presets.

Among the most popular digital synths of all time, the DX7 was produced from 1983-1987, notable for being the first synth to feature FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesis, invented by John Chowning at Stanford University, California. FM synthesis results in a brighter, glassier sound, cutting through a mix with an instantly recognizable tone and dynamic, lively feel, and FM synthesis is also more apt at imitating the sounds of acoustic instruments like brass, bells, and strings than previous types of synthesis. The DX7 is without question one of the most important instruments of the 1980s: in 1986, 40% of the #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 used the DX7 in some capacity; 40% of country #1s; and 60% of RnB #1s. It’s been utilized by nigh-countless legendary artists including Brian Eno (a legendarily adept programmer of the DX7), Whitney Houston, Kenny Loggins, Hall & Oates, A-ha, and many, many more.

The DX7 offers 16- voice polyphony, sine/square/tri/saw up/saw down/random LFO, and 6 envelope generators with 8 parameters each (VCA). The true power of the DX7 (and the reason it was such a game-changer) is its ability to create more complex, unique sounds than just about any consumer-grade synth released before it. It can still recreate the thickness and natural warmth of an analog synth, but naturally the percussive, metallic sounds are the quintessentially ‘80s portion of the DX7’s abilities. The programming is achieved via the array of membrane buttons and a slider (with parameters that had never been seen on a synth prior), and there is a small LCD screen to more easily follow along with programming and sequencing. The DX7 is also outfitted with full MIDI functionality, yet another new invention at the time of the synth’s release.

The 61 keys feature velocity and aftertouch, all with great action and feel. This is an extremely clean DX7, with sparingly little wear on the enclosure.

The original carrying case is included.
