Up for sale, a 1980s Yamaha Broad Bass model BB5000 five-string in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and factory paperwork. Crafted in Japan and introduced in 1985, the BB5000 was the first mass-produced five-string bass. Notably uncommon, the BB5000's tonewoods include five-ply maple/mahogany neck-through body construction, alder body wings, and an ebony fingerboard. At 9lbs 2oz, this Yamaha has plenty of natural resonance and sonic authority. The stock PJ pickup configuration features the best of two of the most enduringly popular bass pickup designs, with broad thump via the split coil P pickup and great articulation and upper-midrange presence and burp from the powerful bridge position J-style single coil. This BB5000 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-125 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation. The five-ply maple/mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .840” deep at the 1st fret and .960” at the 12th. The thick slab ebony fretboard has elliptical pearloid position markers and stock medium jumbo fretwire. The frets are in great shape, with plenty of meat and well-rounded crowns, only showing a hint of wear beneath the strings on frets 1-3. This bass plays cleanly up the 33 7/8” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The bone nut measures 43mm (1.690”) in width. On the headstock, the bass is fitted with a set of replacement gold-plated clover-button tuners which match the originals closely both in terms of function and aesthetics. All of the electronics work as they should, with a three-way pickup selector switch and Master Volume and Tone controls for the PJ pickup pair. The original pair of black speed knobs with grippy, ridged edges are intact. Clean gold-plated hardware includes the bridge and pickup surrounds. Cosmetic wear on the gloss Black finish is limited to a few shallow dings on the lower bout body edge and where the forearm crosses the top, as well as a handful of faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the body as whole. The smooth gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless. The original Yamaha-branded hardshell case is included, along with the factory paperwork, case key and adjustment wrenches.
