Up for sale, a 1980's Tokai Hard Puncher P-Bass PB model in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Evoking everything we love about the Precision Bass, this early Tokai model features a custom color Candy Apple Red finish with a traditional tonewood complement. Features include an ash body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard, 1 5/8" wide carved bone nut, and "PB-Dynamic" split coil pickup. The Hard Puncher has a smooth, balanced sound with a broad, thumpy low end and ideal top end articulation. The bass is well-balanced on a strap and has a nice natural punch and sustain, weighing 8lbs 11oz. We've had this Tokai dialed in to play its best here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 45-100 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a chunky C profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges, filling the palm and gaining even a hair more heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .875" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The thick rosewood fretboard veneer features dot inlay and original medium jumbo frets which have good meat and crown, showing virtually no wear. The scale length is a full 34", and the original carved bone nut measures 1 5/8" in width. The headstock features a block Hard Puncher logo and clover button tuners that turn smoothly, showing uniform surface patina.
On the body, the simple electronics function as intended with Master Volume and Tone knobs governing the stock split coil pickup. Hardware includes a pair of knurled chrome knobs and a four-saddle top loader bridge, and plastics comprise the original one-ply parchment guard. Cosmetic wear on the gloss Candy Apple Red finish is limited to light marks and finish scratches mostly relegated to the perimeter of the instrument. The gloss neck profile is quite smooth with only a few minuscule marks that are not distracting to the palm while fretting.
A gigbag is included.
