Up for sale, a 1980's Tokai Custom Edition J-Bass vintage electric bass in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original faux leather gigbag. Made exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, this bass was designed to replicate the look and tonal properties of Fender's pioneering '60s Jazz Bass model, with a custom color Candy Apple Red finish. Featuring a solid basswood body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard, this Tokai delivers a smooth, balanced response with a tight, round low end, healthy projection, and clarity across all strings.
Plugged in, the sound is bold and defined in the bass register, with an upper midrange burp and good top end articulation. With the bridge pickup singled out, the aggressive growl of the roundwound strings is on full display, with prominent cut and midrange presence. The neck pickup is naturally a bit fuller while still very articulate, thumping quite well with the tone rolled back a bit. With both of the pickups engaged, it's easy to dial in the perfect balance of midrange presence and low end warmth. The bass weighs 8lbs 2oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action, 45-100 roundwound strings, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C shape with slight shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .800” deep at the 1st fret and .975” at the 12th. On the rosewood fretboard, the slender frets are pristine with well-rounded crowns. The neck is straight with an ideally adjusted truss rod, and the bass plays well in all registers. The bass adheres to traditional Fender-centric specs with a 1 1/2" nut width, full 34" scale, and 7 1/4" fretboard radius. On the Fender-shaped headstock, the original nickel-plated clover button tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
All of the electronics function as intended, with individual Volume controls for each pickup and a Master Tone knob. The chrome plating on the hardware is notably clean, accenting the metallic gloss Candy Apple Red finish. Cosmetic wear is limited to light scuffing at the treble side of the pick path, finger wear on the bass-side of the bridge pickup, and a light mark on top between bass side waist and bridge pickup. The gloss neck profile is smooth and pristine.
The original faux leather gigbag is included.
