Up for sale, a 1980 Tokai Springy Sound in perfect working order, 100% original save for a replacement Volume knob and boasting a rare custom color Fiesta Red gloss finish. One of the more storied vintage Japanese Strat-style guitars, the Springy Sound models were celebrated upon their introduction for being a faithful, high-quality spin on the classic Fender platform, even finding their way into the hands of players like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy Gibbons.Produced from 1978-83, this Springy Sound has a 1960's aesthetic with a small Pre-CBS style headstock shape, rosewood fretboard, gray bobbin pickups, and gloss Fiesta Red finish. Weighing 7lbs 13oz, this Tokai has a clear, defined acoustic voice that translates well through a trio of original staggered pole single coils. These gray bobbin alnico magnet single coil pickups have a chewy cut and sparkle, with a round-sounding neck pickup and plenty of bite in the bridge position. The pickups each meter just under 6k ohms. We've had this Springy Sound professionally setup here at Mike and Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, accurate intonation, and low action. The maple neck has a substantial, chunky C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and faintly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .870” deep at the 1st fret and .915” at the 12th. The dark rosewood fretboard retains the original slender fretwire which plays cleanly in every register up the straight neck, showing light wear on the crowns beneath the plain strings on frets 1-10. The instrument matches traditional Fender spec with a 25 1/2“ scale length, 7 1/4” fretboard radius, and a nut that's just shy of a full 1 11/16" (1.670”). On the headstock, the Tokai waterslide decal is extremely clean with spaghetti-style “Tokai” script and text which reads “This is the Exact Replica of the Good Old Strat” where one would typically expect to see the small patent numbers under the model name, stating Tokai's intent of producing a vital, soulful iteration of this classic Fender platform. The stock set of tuners are intact, extremely faithful to Kluson's single line gears. The four-bolt neck plate is embossed with the serial number, dating to 1980.The electronics work as they should, with the original gray bobbin pickup trio wired to full-size 250k pots. All of the original plastics are included save for a similar replaced Volume knob, and there's some expected pick scuffing on the treble side of the three-ply white pickguard. The hardware has plenty of shine, and the original vibrato actuates smoothly for warbles and dives. Cosmetic wear on the gloss Fiesta Red finish includes buckle rash central to the back and scattered finish dings across the body. The neck retains its smooth gloss, with just a few small marks on the profile length.A red padded Tokai-branded gigbag is included.
