Up for sale, a 1980 Greco Super Real SA-900 in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Produced at the pinnacle of Fujigen factory production in Japan, this SA-900 has a commanding natural acoustic tone with a rich, smooth cut. It's an expertly crafted instrument and a perfect example of Japanese "lawsuit" instruments meeting and in some cases exceeding the quality of their USA-made counterparts.
A faithful reissue of a 1960 ES-335, the SA-900 boasts semi-hollowbody maple construction and distinctive rounded "Mickey Mouse" ear body horns, paired with a one-piece mahogany neck capped with a bound, dark rosewood fingerboard. The nickel-plated hardware matches vintage spec, with Greco Deluxe double line tuners, as well as a faithful ABR-1 bridge design. The pickups are some of the very last Maxon-made "The Groove" PAF-style humbuckers offered in Greco instruments (before pickup production was brought in-house at Fujigen), and they're extremely articulate, sweet-sounding, and harmonically complex pickups. An impressive guitar both acoustically and channeled through the humbuckers, this Greco is featherweight at 7lbs 4oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve representative of Gibson’s 1960 shape with moderate shoulder at the nut and a fast feel in every register, gently gaining heft and roundness as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .805" deep at the 1st fret and .935" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features dot inlay and fret edge binding on the medium jumbo frets. These frets match vintage spec with their full factory height and plenty of meat, showing just a touch of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-3 and playing cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original carved bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the guitar boasts the distinctive "open book" shape, with the Greco logo inlaid in pearloid and crown inlay central to the headstock face. The Greco Deluxe double single line tuners are exceedingly accurate to vintage Kluson spec with sharp edged transparent keystone buttons.
All of the electronics work as intended, with individual Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup, capped with gold reflector cap knobs. An amber switch tip and wide bevel multi-ply pickguard round out the plastics, and the hardware includes the ABR-1 style bridge and matching stoptail, and the nickel plating shows light surface patina. The orange oval Super Real label with handwritten serial is visible through the F hole, matching the 0-prefix inked serial on the headstock.
The very warm and vintage-correct Gibson-style deep brown Sunburst finish is rich and glossy, framed by deeply ambered binding and highlighting light figuring in the maple across the back. Cosmetic wear is limited to a few light finish scratches on the body as a whole, largely on the back, along with one small scuff through the gloss also on the back and central to the lower bout. The neck retains its smooth gloss on the profile with just a couple shallow marks on the bass side of the carve in the higher registers.
This Greco SA-900 is a particularly rare model from the most celebrated era of Fujigen factory production, crafted in the spirit of Gibson's best ES models, and exceeding the quality of many of its USA-made counterparts.
A form fit padded silver gigbag is included.
