Up for sale, a 1980 Greco EG800P Super Sound Custom triple pickup electric guitar in excellent condition and in perfect working order with a rare gloss Tobacco Sunburst finish. 100% original save for a set of transparent speed knobs, this expertly crafted Japanese guitar clearly takes its cues from its Gibson cousin (no relation) and is an upscale iteration of the Custom platform with a carved two-piece maple cap and gold hardware.Produced at the Fujigen factory and one of the very first Grecos to feature the company's heralded Super Real branding, this EG800P features a "sandwich" mahogany body, carved maple top, and the original trio of Maxon-made U-2000 humbuckers which deliver a great spin on the classic PAF tone. The humbuckers are meaty and powerful, with a bridge pickup that delivers a growly, cutting sound that’s plenty clear. In the central position on the three-way toggle the Bridge and Middle pickups are engaged out of phase for a sparkling, spanky sound, while the neck pickup has a bold, muscular quality. The guitar weighs 10lbs 15oz with a rich natural punch and healthy sustain. An elegant and easy to play LP, this Greco has been professionally setup with slinky action, solid intonation and fresh 10-46 strings. The three-piece maple neck has a slender C profile carve with slight shoulders at the nut and a bit more roundness and heft further up the fretboard, measuring .830" deep at the 1st fret and .970" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fingerboard is a dark cut of this particular tonewood, featuring pearl block inlay and fret edge binding on the original medium jumbo fretwire. The frets have their full factory height with good meat and crown, showing moderate wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-4, extending more faintly until fret 8. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nut is a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal sustain and note clarity, measuring 1 11/16" wide. The headstock has multi-ply binding, the classic "open book" shape, and split diamond pearl inlay. The gold Kluson-style waffle back tuners turn very smoothly and sport metal tulip buttons. And while the J79 serial number would place production at October of 1979, the Super Real Custom truss rod cover and date codes on the pickups and pots push the instrument's production into the 1980 model year. All of the electronics function as intended, with original date stamps on the baseplates of the Maxon-made humbucker trio from 1980, matching the dates on the quartet of stock full-size pots. The gold plating on the Nashville-style bridge and stopbar shows some surface patina, and plastics include the set of unique transparent speed knobs as well as the original trio of pickup rings. The Tobacco Sunburst gloss is a particularly rare option, framed by ambered multi-ply binding, and while most EG800s of the era have three-piece tops, this example is a standout for its carved two-piece maple cap. Cosmetic wear is limited to some scuffs and scratches mostly clustered central to the back, and a few additional minor nicks on top.A modern brown tolex Lifton-style hardshell case is included.
