Up for sale, a 1980 Gibson Les Paul Standard in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Extremely unusual for any Les Paul of any era, the top appears to be a single piece of carved maple with unbroken grain and no visible seams, and similarly the back also appears to be a single carved piece of mahogany.
This Les Paul delivers a classic range of sounds indicative of this tonewood combination, with incredible clarity and warmth. Loaded with the original pair of T Top humbuckers, the bridge pickup delivers round, chiming tones with a hint of growl and great cut, while the middle position on the three-way toggle has an ideal rhythm sound, especially with the neck pickup rolled back just a touch. The neck position humbucker has warmth and woof without sacrificing detail, providing a perfect lead sound and a sweetness that lends itself to complex chord voicings. This Les Paul weighs 9lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The three-piece maple neck has a slender C shape with modest shoulder at the nut, gaining more heft and roundness as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .830" deep at the 1st fret and .985" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearl trapezoid inlays and the original wide/flat medium jumbo fretwire which shows virtually no wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the "Standard" truss rod cover is intact. The headstock features the original nickel-plated Gibson "flower" tuning machines, and although the guitar was at one time fitted with Grovers, there are no additional screw holes and the original gears are now back on the guitar.
The electronics include the original T Top humbucker pair with patent number-embossed baseplates and ink stamps spanning November, 1979 to January, 1980. The harness features untouched solder joints and the quartet of original CTS pots with date codes from the 24th week of '79. The hardware includes the original chrome Nashville bridge and corresponding stopbar with gleaming chrome plating, and plastics comprise the original pickup rings which show modest aging and a deeply yellowed stock pickguard. The original quartet of gold speed knobs is also intact.
The maple top appears to be a single piece of carved maple, highlighted by the original bright Cherry Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish and framed by deeply amberd binding. The guitar exhibits wear through the gloss on the back lower bout body edge, one finish chip adjacent to the rear switch cover, and buckle rash across the back with some additional ancillary marks. Wear on the top is much more restrained, relegated to a few minor finish scratches and some pinhead-sized nicks mostly adjacent to the binding. The neck retains its smooth gloss, with palm wear down to the bare maple on the bass side shoulder of the profile behind frets 3-7.
The original Gibson "chainsaw" hardshell case is included with blue plush interior, functional latches, and the large Gibson badge on the exterior.
