Up for sale, a 1980 Gibson Les Paul Pro in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. The Pro model was short-lived, and this vintage Gibson has a feature set roughly mirroring a 1956 Les Paul Standard, with a pair of clear bobbin P-90 single coil pickups that absolutely roar.
These pickups take full advantage of the time-tested tonewood combination of a solid mahogany body and carved maple top, articulating the attack of maple as well as the warm, thick growl of the mahogany. Additionally, the solid ebony fretboard gives the guitar a glassy treble snap that works well with the midrange-forward character of the P-90s. The guitar weighs a particularly hearty 11lbs 14oz, dishing out plenty of sustain and sonic authority with a strong bark when strummed acoustically. We've had this Les Paul Pro professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The three-piece maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve at the nut with additional depth and shoulder further up the fretboard, measuring .840" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 12th. The ebony fretboard has pearloid trapezoid inlay and original medium jumbo frets which have Gibson’s wide/flat fret dress of the era, retaining good meat with light wear on the crowns of frets 1-3, and wear extending even more faintly beneath the plain strings until fret 6. The guitar plays cleanly in every register up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock is fitted with the original Gibson-branded, Schaller-made tuning machines which have clean chrome plating and keystone buttons. The back of the headstock is also marked "Second" for some minor finish flaw, imperceptible after 40+ years.
All of the electronics are original, with clear bobbin P-90 pickups and CTS pots that date to the 39th week of 1979. Original hardware includes the chrome-plated Nashville bridge and corresponding stopbar, and stock plastics include the quartet of black speed knobs, cream pickup covers and matching single-ply pickguard.
The Ebony gloss nitro lacquer finish exhibits a bit of finish shrinkage along the seams of the three-piece top, an area of buckle rash central to the waist on the back, and various finish scratches and nicks, also largely relegated to the back and lower bout body edge. The body and neck binding is deeply ambered, with some finish checking at the fret nibs on the neck. The neck profile also retains its smooth nitro gloss, with a few shallow finish chips clustered behind frets 3-8 that don't impact playability.
The original black tolex hardshell case with red plush interior is included, with a clean Gibson silkscreen logo on the lid, functional latches, and the original handle.
