Up for sale, a 1978 Fender Telecaster Custom, honestly played and complete with a hardshell case. This Telecaster has a body-only refinish in Mocha, which was also a popular factory finish option in this era, highlighting the dynamic grain of the ash body. Weighing 8lbs 13oz, this Telecaster has an authoritative and punchy natural acoustic quality, blending the midrange complexity and note attack of ash with the glassy treble cut of the maple fingerboard.
A Telecaster model with a broad tonal range, this guitar blends the twang and sparkle of a classic Telecaster bridge pickup with the humbucker warmth of the Seth Lover-designed Fender "Wide Range" pickup in the neck position. A very clear and percussive sounding humbucker design with CuNiFe magnets and more shimmer and top end detail than most dual coil pickups, the Wide Range humbucker pairs very well with the bridge position single coil in terms of output, and the two pickups compliment each other very well when both are engaged. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Telecaster Custom with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a deep U-shaped profile carve with very generous shoulders and plenty of heft, measuring .905" deep at the 1st fret and .935" at the 12th. The maple fretboard has a 7 1/4" radius, and the original medium fretwire has good meat and well-rounded crowns, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly in every register up the 25 1/2" scale, and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, upgraded to a carved piece of bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. The headstock retains the original Fender "F" tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch well with gleaming chrome plating. The neck pocket and heel have a few factory stamps, along with the S8-prefix serial sticker in the pocket, matching the serial on the headstock face.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with the original pickup pair and quartet of CTS pots that date to the 45th week of '76. The pickup cavities and neck pocket retain the original Olympic White gloss finish. Hardware is all original, comprising the six-saddle bridge and serialized three-bolt F neck plate, and plastics include the original quartet of Strat-style knobs and the large three-ply pickguard.
The refinished gloss Mocha body finish is very faithful in tint and sheen to a Fender factory Mocha finish, exhibiting tight, heavy horizontal finish checking. There are various dings, finish chips and scuffs on the body as a whole, particularly concentrated on the body perimeter, with an area of buckle rash central to the back. The original gloss finish on the neck is quite clean and smooth.
A modern molded hardshell case is included.
