Up for sale, a 1979 Marshall JMP 2204 Master Model 50w head and matching 1960A 4x12 speaker cabinet in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Featuring original custom color white tolex on both the head and speaker box with unusual large black Marshall logos and small check grillcloth, this visually and sonically stunning Marshall retains its original Celestion G12-65 speaker quad. Produced in the proverbial "sweet spot" for late '70s Master Model JMPs, this 2204 features cascading preamp gain and the kind of rich, muscly, ripping textures synonymous with AC/DC's renaissance. At 50 watts, the amp has plenty of power and crunch, and the Master Volume is an infinitely usable tool for creating natural sounding drive at a variety of volumes. Conversely, turning the Master to 10 and dialing in the Preamp Volume to taste yields more Plexi-like textures. The EL-34 power tubes are Marshall's signature valve of choice and have ample sizzle and headroom, and this amp is fitted with a brand new properly biased pair from Sovtek.
The circuit is very original, benefitting from a few voicing tweaks courtesy of Peter Stroud of 65 Amps, and updated with an effects loop added via 1/4" jacks on the back of the chassis. Stroud's mods essentially tame the excessive brightness of this model with a few component value adjustments, making the Tone controls far more usable. The original Drake transformers are all intact with cleanly stamped model numbers on the bells. The chart on the chassis has a handwritten September, 1979 test date, consistent with the L-suffix serial stamped on the back panel of the chassis. The chassis itself is quite clean, with a very presentable faceplate and all original knobs intact. The speaker cabinet is loaded with the original Celestion G12-65 T3120 12" speaker quad, and the speakers each have clean "KM9" date stamps on the frames, translating to October of 1979.
The original white elephant tolex is intact on both the head and cab, with the original pair of large plastic black Marshall logos as well as black plastic corners and handles. The 1960A cabinet also retains the original small check grillcloth. All of the original piping is intact, along with the original sprung amp feet. This is a truly remarkable vintage Marshall with custom color tolex, freshly biased power tubes, and a full checkup of the circuit by our techs here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar.
