Up for sale, a 1979 Gibson ES-175 CC in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with a Gibson USA hardshell case. A limited run model available in '79, this ES-175 CC boasts a Charlie Christian blade pickup in lieu of the usual humbuckers. The Charlie Christian pickup, favored by the man himself in the 1930s and prized by a wide swath of Jazz guitarists, hadn't been outfitted on a production Gibson model until the ES-175 CC.
The fully hollow maple body gives the guitar both the immediate attack and clarity of maple, but also an airy quality and smoothness befitting the hollowbody construction. Authoritative and particularly clear and bell-like, the ES-175 CC really sings through a vintage tube amp, and acoustically the guitar has a big, open sound with a percussive midrange chop. Lightweight at 7lbs 6oz, this ES-175 CC has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 roundwound strings, spot-on intonation, and ideal action.
The three-piece maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut with notable roundness and shoulder further up the fretboard, measuring .770" deep at the 1st fret and .935" at the 9th. The bound rosewood fretboard is inlaid with pearloid split parallelograms and retains the original medium jumbo fretwire. The frets have their wide/flat factory fret dress, showing moderate uniform wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-4 and fainter wear extending to fret 8. The guitar plays effortlessly up the straight neck with an ideally adjusted and responsive truss rod. The scale length is 24 3/4", and the nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width. The headstock features the ES-175/CC truss rod cover and original Gibson nickel-plated "flower" tuners which turn smoothly and function reliably.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the Charlie Christian pickup is governed by Master Volume and Tone controls capped with original witch hat knobs. The original floating rosewood bridge and clean chrome trapeze tailpiece are both intact, as is the multi-ply pickguard which shows some requisite pick wear. The "Union Made" Gibson label is intact and visible through the F hole. The Tobacco Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss finish shows some minor marks in the black of the Sunburst on top, buckle rash central to the back, and some additional dings and finish scratches, also largely relegated to the back as well.
A Gibson USA brown tolex hardshell case is included, with functional latches and the original handle. The case lock is not present.
