Up for sale, a 1979 Epiphone Genesis Custom electric guitar in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. Designed by Gibson’s Director of Marketing at the time, Jim Walker, the Genesis is a unique and short-lived model produced only from 1979-1981. This rare iteration is amongst the very first models exclusively made in Japan during 1979 before the remaining production moved to Taiwan, indicated by the coveted TBK pots and “Japan” ABR-1 bridge. A worthy competitor to Yamaha’s SG line of “Les Paul killers,” the Genesis features a solid mahogany body with extra extended double cutaways, multi-ply binding abound, and pair of powerful humbuckers with coil tapping functionality. The pickups produce a wide range of tones from beefy humbucker growl to polite, snappy single coil clarity. Weighing 9lbs 10oz, this Genesis has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, accurate intonation, and comfortable action.
The mahogany neck has a quintessential rounded medium C shaped profile with moderate shoulder, measuring .860” deep at the 1st fret and .975” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearl block inlay and stock medium jumbo fretwire. The frets have plenty of height and meat, with light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-2, and some flattening of the crowns extending further up the fretboard. The guitar plays cleanly in all registers up the straight neck with an ideally adjusted and responsive truss rod. The scale length is 24 3/4“, and the nut measures 1 11/16“ in width. The bound “open book” headstock features the original “Genesis” truss rod cover, pearl Epiphone logo inlay, and stock set of gold tuners that turn smoothly and hold their pitch well.
On the body, the stock electronics feature large TBK pots wired to the original pickups, with a three-way toggle selector switch, a two-way coil tap, individual Volume controls, and a Master Tone. The gold hardware shows light wear through the plating, and the stock black speed knobs are clean. The entirety of the instrument is framed with aged multi-ply cream binding. Cosmetic wear is limited to scuffing in the pick path and light finish scratches and nicks relegated to the back of the body, with an isolated finish chip on the back corner of the headstock. The neck sports a remarkably clean and smooth gloss finish on the profile.
A hardshell case is included.
