Up for sale, a 1978 Ryoji Matsuoka MR100 in excellent, 100% original condition, complete with a hardshell case and hangtags. While somewhat less prolific in his output than other Japanese classical luthiers, self-taught Ryoji Matsuoka began crafting his own instruments shortly after World War II, drawing heavy inspiration from legends like José Ramirez, Hermann Hauser, and David Rubio. After establishing Matsuoka Musical Instruments Co., Ltd. in 1959, Matsuoka went on to produce quality classical guitars for nearly fifty years prior to his death in 2014. Expertly handcrafted in Japan, this MR100 is modeled specifically after David Rubio’s innovative design, featuring asymmetrical fan bracing and the famed nodal bar.

Premium tonewoods include a solid spruce top, solid Indian rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, and ebony fingerboard. The Rubio-style seven-fan bracing and incorporated nodal bar (a short brace located beneath the treble-side of the bridge, running perpendicular to the soundboard grain) deliver crisp, distinct trebles with a bold and smooth bass register; indeed, this guitar very clearly follows in the tradition of the Spanish master luthiers both in regards to construction and tonal clarity. Warm, rich, and sweet, this classical is breathy, immediate, and dynamic in its response, with remarkable harmonic complexity and plenty of projection on tap. Featherweight at 3lbs 15oz, this MR100 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with normal tension strings and ideal action.
