1978 Rickenbacker 4001 Vintage Electric Bass Mapleglo, 100% Original w/ Case

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1978 Rickenbacker 4001 in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Featuring neck through maple body construction, this Rickenbacker thumps and growls with the best and offers healthy sustain, boasting a natural Mapleglo gloss finish that highlights flame figuring extending along the bass side of the body. The bass weighs 9lbs 2oz, strung with fresh 45-105 roundwound strings, and delivering plenty of midrange power and punch via the two original Hi-Gain pickups. This 4001 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and solid intonation.

The three piece maple/walnut neck has a full D-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder, measuring .925” deep at the 1st fret just beyond the volute, and a fractionally more slender .905” at the 12th fret. The 33 1/4" scale is Rickenbacker's traditional long scale, and the gloss-finished slab rosewood fretboard features original slender frets and pearl triangle inlays. The frets have fret-edge binding, showing only light, uniform wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-3, extending beneath the A and D strings until fret 6. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The headstock features the maple wings used in this era (as opposed to walnut) retaining the original Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover and the set of original clover button tuning machines which offer a smooth, reliable response.

All of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and an original harness with CTS pots that date to the 37th week of 1977. The Rick-o-Sound stereo jack plate has a cleanly stamped RE-prefix serial number that dates to May of 1978. All of the original plastic parts are intact and extremely clean including the pickguard, long baton switch tip, and quartet of knobs. The chrome-plated hardware is notably well-kept too, including the original bridge pickup bezel and bridge assembly, complete with the adjustable mute and viable mute foam.

The Mapleglo gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and cosmetic wear is limited to a spot of light buckle rash central to the upper bout on the back, and just a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole, mostly relegated to the back. The gloss finish on the neck profile is nigh flawless.

The original black tolex hardshell case with blue plush interior and black leather ends is included. All three latches are intact and functional, as is the stock handle.
