Up for sale, a 1978 Rickenbacker 4001 in 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Featuring a unique Fireglo gloss finish with less of a burst gradient than most, the burst features a nice peachy center and deep red edges, highlighting uncommon flame figuring on the body wings.
With neck through body construction, this honestly-played Rickenbacker is extremely resonant and powerful-sounding, thumping and growling in equal measure and offering exquisite sustain. Currently strung with 45-100 roundwound strings, there's equal parts midrange power and fundamental warmth available via the two original Hi-Gain single coil pickups. The bass is well-balanced on a strap at 9lbs 5oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and solid intonation.
The neck has a round C profile that feels very fast and effortlessly navigable, measuring
.910” at the 2nd fret just beyond the volute, and .920” at the 12th. The 33 1/4" scale is Rickenbacker's traditional long scale, and the gloss-finished slab rosewood fretboard features original frets and pearl triangle inlays. The slender frets offer easy playability in every register, showing light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-5, extending beneath the A and D strings until fret 7. The bass plays well with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rods. The nut measures a full 1 5/8" in width, with ideal string spacing. The original Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover is present, and the clover button tuners turn smoothly.
All of the electronics work as they should, with the original harness and CTS pots that date to the 21st week of '78. The Rick-o-Sound stereo jackplate has a cleanly stamped serial number with an "RI" prefix that dates to September of 1978. All of the original chrome hardware is intact, and all plastic parts are present too, with an added "Zero-Mod" transparent thumb rest mounted to the pickguard.
The Fireglo gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, exhibiting finish loss along the back lower bout body edge and more sporadically along the body horns and heel. There are various finish scratches and nicks across the back, some small marks along the neck profile and headstock edges, and a small amount of stabilized separation of the bass side body wing at the rear strap button
A modern hardshell case is included.
