Up for sale, a 1978 Gibson "The Paul" in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A simple, straightforward Gibson model offered for only a few short years at the end of the Norlin era, The Paul features a solid walnut body and neck with a slab ebony fretboard and a pair of original T-Top humbuckers. Offering a sharper note attack than mahogany, walnut has a present, sweet-sounding midrange, and being less dense than maple, allows for ample representation of the low frequencies too. The pickups are warm and articulate with great top end clarity and an aggressive edge when pushed hard, capturing the acoustic qualities of the body. A no-frills tone machine with an ideal tonewood and pickup complement, this Paul weighs 8lbs 6oz, dialed in here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation. The three-piece Walnut neck has a fast-feeling and slender C-shaped profile carve with just enough roundness in the shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, gaining hair more heft as you travel up the fingerboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .980" at the 12th. The ebony fretboard retains the original jumbo fretwire which has ostensibly been leveled and crowned in the guitar’s lifetime, currently showing zero wear and playing cleanly in every register. The guitar conforms to traditional Gibson spec with a 24 3/4" scale length and 1 11/16" nut width. The bare walnut headstock face features both the original gold Gibson silkscreen and "The Paul" truss rod cover, with a few minor nicks on the headstock edges. The stock Grover Rotomatic tuning machines with metal tulip buttons are intact and turn smoothly, with uniform patina on the nickel plating. All of the electronics work as intended, with untouched solder joints and patent number embossed baseplates on the T Tops, with clean date stamps from November and December of 1978. The wiring harness is also flawless, with CTS pots that date to the 45th week of '78. The hardware includes the original chrome-plated Nashville bridge and stopbar, both retaining plenty of shine, and the stock quartet of black speed knobs is intact too. The walnut body is quite ergonomic and comfortable, with a subtle top carve on the bass side and belly contour on the back. Cosmetic wear on the satin nitro lacquer Walnut finish is limited to light buckle rash at the edge of the belly contour on the back, and a few additional nicks and scuffs on the back and lower bout body edge. The satin finish on the neck profile has been buffed by the palm to more of a semi-gloss, smooth to the touch of only a few shallow marks on the profile length.A black tolex hardshell case with gold interior is included.
