Up for sale, a 1978 Fender Stringmaster Dual 6 console lap steel in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original telescoping legs and black tolex hardshell case. An instrument virtually unseen in Fender's '70s lineup, this D6 retains its quartet of original gray bobbin pickups, with dual 22” scale necks and a Black gloss finish.
This Stringmaster has an extremely sweet, articulate, and dynamic sound. The trebles have quintessential Fender sparkle and percussive cut, and a three-way selector toggles between the two necks. Additional singular Volume wheels beneath the "ashtray" bridge covers allow for further tonal versatility beyond the Master Volume and Tone knobs that govern the pair of necks.
The pair of fretboards are extremely clean with rectangle position markers, and the tuning machine trays on the pegheads have ample shine, covering the original tuner sets with hexagonal buttons (matching the "F" tuners of the era). String spacing at the nuts measures 1 7/8".
The electronics all function as intended, with untouched solder joints and visible date codes on the CTS pots from the 36th week of '78. All pickups retain their original windings with strong output, and the pickup bobbins have matching 1978 date stamps. The original pair of knurled chrome knobs are intact, the small Fender badge is present between the necks, and the leg flanges are all original.
The Black gloss finish is an extremely rare option on a steel not typically known to exist in Fender's '70s lineup. The steel retains the large Fender logo on its face, and there is some unusual finish wear on the bottom through the gloss from contact with the lining on the case lid (and presumably humidity plus salinity in the air). There are a few additional marks on the body perimeter and a more matte appearance to the finish just beyond the headstock plates, also from contact with the case, but extremely minor.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included with a raised Fender tail-less logo on the exterior along with an impressive collection of vintage Hawaii stickers (and a vintage Fender sticker too) on the case lid. The original latches and handle are intact, with an orange plush interior and separate compartment for storing the original chrome-plated legs.
