Up for sale, a 1978 Fender Mustang in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Featuring the fairly uncommon cosmetic combination of a deeply yellowed Olympic White gloss finish paired with black plastics, this stunning vintage example is complete with the original hardshell case. With an ash body, maple neck, and dark rosewood fretboard, there's plenty of snap, snarl, and cut available from this Mustang. The ash body ensures a certain midrange authority and note attack, while the rosewood board tempers high treble frequencies. Whether you want chiming traditional single coil bite or the model's classic out-of-phase sound, this Mustang is an articulate and clear-sounding Fender that's simply a ton of fun to play. The guitar weighs 7lbs 11oz, professionally setup here at Mike and Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has plenty of heft, splitting the difference between a V and U-shaped carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .890" deep at the 1st fret and .955" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has pearl dot inlay and original slender frets which show light, uniform wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-3, with wear extending more faintly beneath the plain strings until fret 6. The truss rod is responsive and ideally adjusted, and the guitar plays cleanly in all registers up the straight neck. The guitar has the full 24" Mustang scale, 7 1/4" fretboard radius, and 1 5/8" nut width. On the headstock, the original chrome Fender "F" tuners turn very smoothly, and the Mustang logo and S-prefix serial on the headstock face is flawless.
The electronics include CTS pots that date to the 21st week of 1978 and untouched solder joints. The gray bobbin single coils also have 1978 date stamps on their baseplates, and all routes are untouched with original brass shielding plates intact. All original hardware is present, exhibiting bright chrome plating with just a dusting of patina on the control plate and vibrato unit, and more concentrated wear on the barrel saddles. All original plastics are clean and accounted for as well, with the Strat-style knobs used later in the '70s. The Olympic White gloss finish has yellowed considerably, with small dings and scuffs along the back lower bout body edge, faint tan lines from a few very cleanly removed stickers on the back, and just a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole. The gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and nigh flawless.
The original black tolex hardshell case with red plush interior is included and in great shape with functional latches, the original handle, and raised Fender logo on the case exterior. The black leather case ends are very well-kept, and even the snapping neck retainer is intact.
