Out Of Stock
Up for sale, a 1978 Fender Mustang Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This ash-bodied Mustang Bass weighs 9lbs, offering rich natural sustain and powerful, clear note attack. Channeled through the split coil gray bobbin pickup, this Mustang Bass' sound is warm and thick, with classic low end thump and clarity in the treble frequencies. Strung with 45-100 flatwound D'addario Chromes strings, we've had this Mustang Bass professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a fairly chunky U-shaped profile carve with full shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges in every register, measuring .860" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard has been professionally refretted with vintage-spec slender fretwire which shows just a touch of wear on the crowns of frets 1-3. The truss rod is responsive, the neck is straight, and this bass plays cleanly up the 30" scale. The modern nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and the headstock retains the original Fender-stamped tuners. The S8-prefix serial is also present beneath the block Mustang logo on the headstock face, dating to 1978.

All of the electronics are original with untouched solder joints, and the CTS pots date to the 6th week of 1978, while the gray bobbin pickup has a 1978 date stamp, and the serialized sticker on the underside of the pickguard also matches the number on the headstock. The chrome is particularly bright and clean on the control plate and bridge, and the four "fingers" for the string mute have each been fitted with fresh foam (mutes are currently bent away from making contact with the strings). Original plastics include the Strat-style knobs, deep maroon thumbrest, and multi-ply pickguard which shows some expected pick scuffing.

The Natural gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, exhibiting a couple areas of light buckle rash at the waist on the back, with some additional finish scuffs and minor marks on the back, extending to a lesser extent to the lower bout on top. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss with some light wear on the treble-side shoulder behind the 1st fret and a couple additional minor marks on the bass-side shoulder.

The original black tolex hardshell case with orange plush interior is included. The case has functional latches and the original handle. A Fender-branded strap is also included.
