Up for sale, a 1977 Rickenbacker 4001 fretless model in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Featuring a Mapleglo gloss finish and neck through body construction, this Rickenbacker thumps and growls with the best, and the sustain is near endless. Currently strung with flatwound 45-100 strings that deliver a distinctive smoothness, there's equal parts midrange power and fundamental warmth available via the two original Hi-Gain single coil pickups. The bass is well-balanced on a strap and notably lightweight at only 8lbs 13oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action.
The neck has a full C-shaped profile carve with moderate shoulder and a feel that's substantial yet fast, measuring .915" deep just beyond the volute and a slightly more slender .885" at the octave. The 33 1/4" scale is Rickenbacker's traditional long scale, and the gloss-finished slab rosewood fretboard features pearl dot inlay and side dots marking the position of every "fret." The bass plays easily in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rods. The nut measures 1.650" in width, with ideal string spacing. The original Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover is present, and there is minor finish chipping on the top headstock edge. The original tuning machines with tulip buttons are intact and turn smoothly.
All of the electronics work as they should, with the original harness and CTS pots that date to 1976. The Rick-o-Sound stereo jackplate has a cleanly stamped serial number with a "QD" prefix that dates to April of 1977. All of the original hardware is intact with gleaming chrome plating, and all original plastics are accounted for and near mint. Cosmetic wear is limited to a small spot of light buckle rash central to the upper bout on the back with a few additional finish scratches on the back, and some pinhead-sized nicks on the bass-side lower bout on top and between the pickups. The gloss finish on the neck profile is nigh flawless, and the gloss on the fretboard is also clean as can be.
The original black tolex Ric hardshell case with blue plush interior is included. The case has a clean exterior with black leather ends, retaining a trio of functional latches and the stock handle.
