Up for sale, a 1976 Gibson Les Paul Standard in excellent condition and in perfect working order with the original Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss finish. From the first year the Les Paul Standard was reintroduced to Gibson's catalog lineup, the guitar retains its original pair of T Top humbuckers.
The three-piece carved maple top, two-piece solid mahogany body, and maple neck deliver the classic range of sounds indicative of this tonewood combination, with incredible clarity and warmth. The bridge pickup has round, chiming tones with a hint of growl and great cut, while the middle position on the three-way toggle has an ideal rhythm sound, especially with the neck pickup rolled back just a touch. The neck position humbucker has warmth and woof without sacrificing detail, providing a perfect lead sound and a sweetness that lends itself to complex chord voicings. This Les Paul weighs 9lbs 12oz, and acoustically the guitar has a clear, smooth voice with top end sparkle and rich sustaining tones. We've had this Gibson professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The three-piece maple neck has slender C profile carve with modest shoulder and a fast feel, gaining just a hair more heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .815" deep at the 1st fret and .950" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearl trapezoid inlays and the original wide/flat Gibson fretwire which has good meat, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-7. The guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock features the stickered serial number used in the mid '70s. The guitar features a set of replacement Gibson Deluxe tuning machines with lightly greened keystone buttons and push-in bushings, perfectly matching the footprint of the original gears.
The electronics include the original T Top humbucker pair with patent number-embossed baseplates. The harness features three original CTS pots with matching date codes from the 10th week of '76. The hardware includes the original chrome Nashville bridge and corresponding stopbar, and plastics comprise a genuine replacement Gibson-made pickguard, original pickup rings and switch surround, and a modern set of gold speed knobs.
The maple top has very well-matched seams, and the original nitro lacquer Cherry Sunburst finish is very vibrant, framed by deeply ambered body binding which has a couple dings adjacent to the three-way switch and jack plate. There is some very shallow cosmetic finish chipping along the seam for the “sandwich" body on the lower bout edge, with a tiny amount of Cherry lacquer touchup, and light clear overspray of the original finish on the back. Cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to light buckle rash at the waist and a few additional finish chips and minor marks on the body perimeter. The neck profile retains its original nitro gloss along the profile length, with just a couple minor marks central to the carve behind fret 6.
A vintage Gibson "chainsaw" hardshell case is included.
