Up for sale, a 1975 Yamaha Custom L-52 jumbo acoustic guitar in collector-grade condition, complete with the original hardshell case. Known as the “Budokan guitar”, the L-52 rose to fame after Bob Dylan used it to kick off his legendary 1978 tour with eight shows at the Budokan. A top-of-the-line, hand-made acoustic model, the L-52 is one of the “Four Heavenly Kings” luxury models conceived and overseen by Terry Nakamoto, available only as a special order. Unsurprisingly, they are exceedingly rare today. Beyond Dylan, other famous fans of the L-52 include Paul Simon, Jimmy Page, John Lennon, and more.
Weighing 5lbs 12oz, tonewoods include a spruce top, maple back and sides, and a maple neck with a bound rosewood fingerboard. The saddle is an unusual design in that the saddles are individually adjustable for intonation, as used by Gibson on the J-200 in the early 60s. Taking cues from other jumbo acoustics, the L-52’s 17” lower bout and over 4 1/2” of body depth deliver a balanced, full sound, with power and presence spread evenly across the strings. Incredibly clean and crack-free, this particular L-52 is notable for its extremely well-preserved binding, which is particularly bright and white without the yellowing and deterioration common with other L-52 examples. The gloss Black finish has a small area of light buckle worming at the waist, some light finish scratches in the clear coat and a few minor marks. The original protective plastic film is intact on both pickguards. The gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and clean, save for a few small marks.
The original premium brown Yamaha-branded hardshell case is included, along with an alternate (traditional) bridge saddle insert and the stock “Custom” truss rod cover.
